I don’t keep a very close eye on my blog stats these days, so it escaped my notice until tonight that Panoptiblog had over 1,100 page views in January. That’s probably still a pretty modest number, but it’s our best month ever. I’m not sure what I owe that to, but if you’ve stopped by or posted a link on facebook to share with others, thanks.

What’s that Douglas Adams line? “The fifth book in the increasingly inaptly named Hitchiker’s Trilogy”… or something like that.

Courtesy of jill/txt, here’s the Friday YouTube, a couple of days late.

Via Sullivan, a Taiwanese study suggests blogging improves people’s “sense of well-being and happiness.”

Last week, I assigned my high school students to write a post about blogging at some point. It was meant to a reflection on their work, as well as participation in the tradition of blogging about blogging, itself an extension of writing about writing. All of this sounds a bit naval-gazing to some of them, and I wouldn’t deny that. But sometimes it’s good to gaze at the naval, even if just to clear it of lint. Gazing back inside your own head might be even more productive.

So then Jen asks me the other night, “Did you write a ‘Why I Blog’ post with them?”

Um. Well. No.

But maybe I should.

Of course, since I think about this in my teaching and research, and since it takes up the lion’s share of my recreational writing now, I could go on for a while. I’ll try to keep it short.

Here goes.

Wow. I just lost the rest of that post that I’d been working on for an hour. Had a whole review of Slumdog and Tropic Thunder. Thanks for autosaving, WordPress! Maybe I’d better go looking for another host…

I’ll update it sometime, but not right now.

I have finally gotten rid of the well-intentioned but completely obnoxious feature “Snap Shots,” which gave you a preview of the link you were about to click on. When I first moved us over to WordPress it was the one feature that I really couldn’t stand, but couldn’t figure out how to turn it off. Over time, I’d become used to the annoyance of trying to click on something, and then having to click away to make the bubble disappear, then back before Snap Shots could beat me to the link. Today it annoyed me again, just enough to search through all my menus to see if it could be disabled.

Anyway, that’s gone now.

Well, I’ve taken a couple of weeks off from the blog, and I have a lot of guilt about it. A new coaching staff in Denver, Obama’s pending inauguration, another restaurant review, a terrific movie…

I’ll start catching up today, for whoever’s out there.

Every time I run into the trackbacks issue, I’m pushed toward getting the WordPress version of Panoptiblog going. The links aren’t up yet, but I’m working on it.

Over on the right, you’ll now see a “Spread the Panoptiblog” feature. I just stuck it there to see what it’ll do. I assume it makes it easier to share posts from here through the services listed… but I honestly have no idea how it works. If any of you readers out there mess around with it and tell me what it’ll do, I’ll see if it’s worth keeping.

I’d do it myself, but for god’s sake people, I’m comping in a month. I’m busy.

UPDATE: Are those tags redundant?

Light posting this week, as Jen and I are moving into a new (bigger, better) place. In the meantime, my brother Zeke is going to do some guest posting about The Dark Knight and whatever else is on his mind.
